Welcome to Field Notes: A new photography blog based in Scotland

I’m sure those who know me well (and who’ve had to listen to me banging on about “finishing” this website for the past year!) will be delighted to hear that it’s finally live… and honestly, I’m pretty happy about it too.

I’ve been without an online home for my writing, photography and creative work for almost three years, ever since retiring my old blog, A Travellin’ Tale, post-pandemic and midway through a full-time comms role. At some point, I realised it no longer fit the person I was, the life I was living or the world more generally (although the very old free WordPress version – featuring my travel musings up until 2016 – is still floating around online somewhere for those willing to dig!)

With this new site, I wanted to create a space where all the different aspects of my freelance work could finally live together – somewhere I could direct people when they ask the question I still sometimes struggle to answer concisely: “So… what exactly is it you do?”

While photography sits at the heart of the website – from landscape and travel work to commissions and commercial projects – I also wanted it to reflect the wider range of creative services I provide to freelance clients. I have more than 15 years of experience working across media, communications, social media, marketing and PR, from newspaper and magazine editorships to executive marketing roles, and all of that experience now feeds into the work I create for photography and content clients today.

It’s also the first time I’ve sold my photography through an online shop that I’m personally running. I’ve dabbled with print-on-demand in the past, but never felt fully happy with the quality or overall experience. Recently, I’ve had more enquiries about prints and photography products, so I’m hoping the new shop will make the ordering process much easier (and a special thank you to those who’ve ordered prints in the past and been incredibly patient along the way!)

Alongside the portfolio, commissions and online shop, one of the parts of the website I’m most excited about is Field Notes — finally having a blog and creative space of my own again.

After leaving my last full-time role, it took me a while to rebuild confidence in my writing and photography (and in my own voice more generally, come to think of it!) so it feels really good to be excited about creating and sharing work again.

My hope is that Field Notes becomes a place to share stories from Scotland and beyond, with photography adventures, some of my favourite lesser-known spots and practical advice – especially for self-taught photographers like me or anyone just starting out with a camera.

If you’ve read this far, thank you so much for stopping by the new site, and I hope you’ll stick around for a browse!
